The Section on Great Apes (SGA) and the Section on Small Apes (SSA) of the IUCN SSC Primate Specialist Group, call for immediate international assistance to strengthen fire-fighting efforts, protect frontline responders, support affected communities and wildlife, and prevent further fires from spreading into irreplaceable forests. Emergency action must be followed by sustained investment in peatland protection and rewetting, early-warning systems, fire prevention, restoration, and community capacity. Protecting these landscapes is essential to securing a future for orangutans and the people who depend on them.
