The purpose of this update is to share information with members of the IUCN SSC Primate Specialist Group’s Section on Great Apes (SGA) and the wider great ape conservation community on the current status of the Bundibugyo virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the threat it poses to great apes, and recommendations for protecting human-habituated and wild great apes from Bundibugyo virus disease (BVD).
